Care and Tank Setup

Electric Blue Johanni reach 5 to 6 inches. A 50 gallon tank is the minimum for a mbuna group, and longer tanks give more territory. Like all Lake Malawi cichlids, they need hard, alkaline water, so keep the temperature at 74 to 82°F and the pH at 7.5 to 8.4. Stack plenty of rocks to create caves and break lines of sight, and use sand or crushed coral to help buffer the pH. Mbuna graze on algae in the wild, so feed a high-quality spirulina-based pellet or flake and avoid heavy meaty diets that can lead to bloat.

Tank Mates

This is an aggressive mbuna, so keep it with other mbuna of similar temperament and use one male with several females to spread out aggression. The Electric Yellow Cichlid makes a classic color contrast, and the Acei Cichlid is popular in mixed mbuna setups. The Synodontis Multipunctatus catfish handles hard water and cleans up leftovers, and many keepers add a Bristlenose Pleco to graze algae.
