Care and Tank Setup

Red Devils reach about 12 inches, so plan for at least a 70 gallon tank for one adult and more for a pair. Keep the water at 75 to 79°F with a pH of 6.5 to 7. They are strong diggers that move gravel, uproot plants and shift decor, so use sand, heavy rocks set directly on the tank bottom and sturdy equipment. A powerful filter and large weekly water changes are important because they eat heavily. Feed a high-quality cichlid pellet as the staple, plus shrimp, krill and other meaty foods.

Tank Mates

Red Devils are aggressive and are often best kept alone or as a mated pair. In a very large tank, they can live with robust fish such as an Albino Oscar or a large armored catfish like the L-83 Sailfin Pleco. Keepers of big predatory cichlids also like the Wolf Cichlid as a separate showpiece. The closely related Midas Cichlid is similar in looks and attitude, and fans of tough cichlids also choose the Jack Dempsey Cichlid. Avoid small or slow fish.
