• Minimum tank: 50 gallons (70 gallons for a pair)

Care and Tank Setup

Jack Dempseys reach about 10 inches, so a 50 gallon tank is the minimum for one adult, and 70 gallons or more is better for a pair or a community of large fish. Keep the water at 72 to 82°F with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. They like to dig, so use sand or smooth gravel with rocks, caves and driftwood to create territories. Strong filtration and weekly partial water changes keep them healthy and colorful. Feed a high-quality cichlid pellet as the staple and add frozen shrimp, bloodworms and krill a few times a week.

Tank Mates

This is an aggressive cichlid, especially when breeding, so choose tank mates that are robust and similar in size. Good options include the Salvini Cichlid, the Electric Blue Acara Cichlid, an Albino Tiger Oscar and other Central American cichlids such as the Firemouth Cichlid in a large tank. Avoid small community fish. Fans of tough cichlids should also look at the Red Devil Cichlid.
