Care and Tank Setup
Firemouths reach about 6 inches, and a 30 gallon tank works for one fish or a pair, with more space for a community. Keep the water at 70 to 75°F with a pH of 6 to 7.5. Use a sandy bottom, because they sift through the substrate for food, and add rocks, caves and driftwood to break up sight lines. Hardy plants such as Anubias and Java fern are usually left alone. Feed a quality cichlid pellet or flake, plus frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and mysis. With good filtration and regular water changes, they are a rewarding first cichlid.
Tank Mates
Firemouths are semi-aggressive but more peaceful than most Central American cichlids. In a roomy tank they can live with the Blue Acara Cichlid, the Salvini Cichlid, the Black Convict Cichlid and the gentle Keyhole Cichlid. Silver dollars, larger tetras and plecos also make good companions. If you want something bigger and bolder later, the Jack Dempsey Cichlid is a natural next step.
