Care and Tank Setup

Keyhole Cichlids come from slow, tannin-stained waters in northern South America, including Venezuela and the Guianas, so they feel safest in a tank with plants, driftwood, leaf litter and a few caves. Dim lighting or floating plants help these shy fish come out and show color. A 20 gallon tank works for one fish, and 30 gallons is better for a pair. They rarely dig up plants, which makes them a great cichlid for aquascapes. Keep water clean with weekly partial changes and feed a varied diet. Mated pairs may spawn on flat stones and guard their young.

Tank Mates

Because they are peaceful, Keyholes do best with calm fish that will not bully them. Schooling tetras such as the Cardinal Tetra, bottom dwellers like the Panda Cory and dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma Agassizi make excellent companions.
