Care and Tank Setup
A Midas Cichlid needs a large, sturdy setup. Start juveniles in at least 75 gallons and plan for 125 gallons for a full-grown adult. Use strong filtration rated well above the tank volume, since these heavy eaters produce a lot of waste. Sand or smooth gravel, large rocks set on the bottom glass and a few caves make a good layout. This fish digs and moves decorations, so keep equipment secure and heaters guarded. Feed a high-quality cichlid pellet daily, with frozen foods and vegetables a few times a week, and change 25 to 30 percent of the water weekly.
Tank Mates
Midas Cichlids are among the most aggressive cichlids in the hobby and are often kept alone. In very large tanks, experienced keepers combine them with similarly sized, robust fish such as the Albino Oscar and armored catfish like the L-83 Sailfin Pleco. Fans of hump-headed cichlids also love the Red Hump Head Flowerhorn, which shares Midas ancestry but should live in its own tank. Related tough cichlids include our new Red Devil Cichlid and Texas Cichlid, but only mix them with a Midas in a huge tank and with a backup plan.
