Care and Tank Setup

Ramshorns thrive in almost any established freshwater tank. Harder water with some calcium keeps their shells strong and glossy, so add a mineral supplement if your water is very soft.

They breed easily, and the population grows with the amount of food available. Feed your fish carefully and remove extras by hand if numbers climb. Ramshorns generally leave healthy plants alone and focus on algae and soft decaying leaves.

Ramshorn Snails also make a helpful early warning system, since they quickly become less active when water quality drops. Their many color forms let you match them to your aquascape, and a busy group of red or blue snails moving across the glass looks great in planted and shrimp tanks alike.

Tank Mates

These snails are safe with peaceful fish, shrimp and other snails. They are a natural fit alongside the Zebra Nerite Snail, the Amano Algae Eating Shrimp and the Red Cherry Shrimp. Our new Bamboo Shrimp shares the same calm tanks. Avoid loaches, puffers and the Assassin Snail, which eat snails.
