Care and Tank Setup

Red Belly Piranhas reach about 14 inches in the long run. Juveniles can start in a 55 gallon tank, but adults need 200 gallons or more, especially for a group. Keep the water at 74 to 78°F with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5, and use very strong filtration, since they are heavy, messy eaters. Provide driftwood, plants and dim lighting so they feel secure, because nervous piranhas are skittish rather than bold. Feed a varied meaty diet such as fish fillet, shrimp, mussels and quality carnivore pellets, and remove leftovers quickly. Always use care when working in the tank.

Tank Mates

Red Belly Piranhas are predators and are best kept in a species-only group of several fish raised together. Some keepers add a large armored catfish, such as the L-83 Sailfin Pleco or a Common Pleco, to handle leftovers.
