Care and Tank Setup
Serpent and brittle stars need a cycled tank with plenty of live rock to hide in. Feed a small piece of shrimp or a sinking pellet near the arms once or twice a week if leftovers are scarce. Like all echinoderms they are very sensitive to salinity changes and copper, so drip acclimate them slowly over an hour or more.
Warning: the Green Brittle Star is a predator that can catch and eat small fish and shrimp. Keep it only with larger fish, or in a fish-only tank. The Fancy Serpent Star and Brittle Star are reef safe scavengers.
Tank Mates
Fancy and Brittle Stars live peacefully with corals, snails like the Astraea Snail and hermits like the Blue Knuckle Hermit Crab. They also suit tanks with other stars such as the Brittle Starfish Koi. Avoid triggers, puffers and Harlequin Shrimp, which may attack sea stars.
