Care and Tank Setup

Sea cucumbers need a mature tank with a sand bed deep and rich enough to feed them, so they are not a good choice for a brand new setup. Larger cucumbers need larger tanks: Tigertails can stretch well over a foot.

Important safety note: a sea cucumber that is injured or dies can release toxins into the water. Cover every pump and powerhead intake, keep a bag of activated carbon on hand, and check on your cucumber regularly. Drip acclimate slowly and never use copper in their tank.

Tank Mates

Sea cucumbers are reef safe and pair well with other sand cleaners and reef inverts such as the Astraea Snail and the Brittle Starfish Koi. Peaceful reef fish suit them well; avoid puffers, triggers and large angelfish that may nip at them.
