Care and Tank Setup

The most important fact before you buy: Harlequin Shrimp eat only starfish. They will not accept frozen or prepared foods, so you must plan a steady supply of live sea stars, usually Chocolate Chip Starfish or pieces of one, fed every week or two. They will also clear out small Asterina stars, but that will not sustain them long term.

Because of this diet they are best kept as a single or mated pair in a small dedicated tank or a reef without any starfish you want to keep. Otherwise they are reef safe and ignore corals and fish. Drip acclimate slowly and keep copper out of the tank.

Tank Mates

Harlequins do best with small, peaceful fish that will not bother them, such as the Diamond Watchman Goby or Banggai Cardinalfish, and with other reef shrimp like the Candy Pistol Shrimp. Avoid hawkfish, triggers, large wrasses and lionfish.
