Care and Tank Setup

Skunk Cleaner Shrimp need a cycled, stable saltwater tank with live rock for cover. Like all invertebrates they are sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and to copper, so drip acclimate slowly and never dose copper medications in their tank. Each shrimp molts every few weeks; the empty shell looks like a dead shrimp but is normal.

Feed small portions of frozen mysis, brine shrimp or sinking pellets a few times a week, even though the shrimp will also take scraps meant for your fish. Any two adults can pair up and may carry eggs, since they are simultaneous hermaphrodites.

Tank Mates

Cleaner shrimp do best with peaceful fish such as gobies, clownfish and tangs, and they often visit a Yellow Tang or Diamond Watchman Goby to clean them. Other reef shrimp like the Peppermint Shrimp make good company. Keep them away from shrimp eaters such as triggers, lionfish and large hawkfish, and use caution with the Blue Banded Coral Shrimp, which can fight other shrimp.
