Care and Tank Setup

Oscars grow fast and reach 12 to 18 inches, so plan for at least a 70 gallon aquarium for one adult and up to 125 gallons for a pair. They are messy eaters, so strong filtration and weekly water changes of 25 to 50 percent keep nitrates low. Keep the water between 72 and 77°F with a pH of 6 to 8. Use sand or smooth gravel, a few large rocks or driftwood, and a tight lid, because Oscars like to rearrange decor and can jump. Feed a quality cichlid pellet as the staple and add shrimp, earthworms and insects for variety.

Tank Mates

Oscars are semi-aggressive and will eat any fish small enough to fit in their mouth. Good companions are large, peaceful to semi-aggressive fish of similar size, such as a school of Silver Dollar Fish, a group of Bala Sharks or a Silver Arowana in a very large tank. Many keepers also combine a Tiger Oscar with an Albino Tiger Oscar or a Green Terror Cichlid when there is plenty of room.
