Care and Tank Setup

Silver Dollars are schooling fish, so keep at least five together. A single fish can live in 30 gallons, but a school needs 55 to 75 gallons or more, and Red Hooks need the larger end. Keep the water at 74 to 82°F with soft to neutral water. They are mostly herbivores and will eat soft plants, so choose hardy plants like Anubias and Java fern or use artificial plants. Feed a vegetable-based flake or pellet, spirulina, and blanched greens such as lettuce or zucchini, with occasional bloodworms. Use a tight lid, because they can jump when startled.

Tank Mates

Peaceful but large, Silver Dollars do well with fish of similar size. They are popular dither fish for a Tiger Oscar, a Severum Cichlid or an Albino Tiger Oscar, where their calm schooling helps shy cichlids feel safe. Bala Sharks, large tetras and plecos also make good companions. You might also like the Spotted Silver Dollar, a close relative with a speckled pattern.
