Care and Tank Setup

Severums reach 8 to 10 inches. Start with at least 50 gallons for one fish and plan for 75 to 125 gallons for a pair or community. Keep the water at 72 to 84°F, ideally soft to neutral. Use a sandy bottom, driftwood and a few large rocks, with open swimming space in front. They may nibble soft plants, so choose tough species like Anubias or Java fern. Feed a quality cichlid pellet with some plant matter, spirulina, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. Good filtration and regular water changes bring out their best color.

Tank Mates

Severums are semi-aggressive, but usually peaceful toward fish too big to eat. They pair well with Silver Dollar Fish, the Albino Threadfin Geophagus, the Blue Acara Cichlid, larger tetras and plecos. In a big tank they can share space with a Tiger Oscar. Avoid very aggressive Central American cichlids that would outcompete them.
