Care and Tank Setup
Temperature is the key to success. Keep the water cool, ideally in the low to mid 60s, and avoid going above the mid 70s. Use a bare bottom or fine sand, since axolotls can swallow gravel. A gentle filter, hides and low light keep them relaxed.
Feed juveniles daily and adults every two to three days. Keep the tank fully cycled and change water regularly, as axolotls are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite.
Tank Mates
Axolotls do best alone or with other axolotls of similar size, as fish can nip their gills and small animals may be eaten. Many keepers add our new Ramshorn Snail as a cool-water cleanup crew, though an axolotl may eat small ones. If you love amphibians, browse the African Dwarf Frog and Pacman Frog Green, which need their own separate setups.
