Care and Tank Setup

Blood Parrots are hybrid cichlids bred in Asia, and they are hardy and easy to keep. They reach about 8 inches, so a 55 gallon tank works for one or two, while 75 gallons gives a group more room. Keep the water at 77 to 82°F with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5, and use good filtration with weekly partial water changes. Their small, fixed mouths make large food hard to eat, so offer small floating or slow-sinking cichlid pellets plus frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. Color-enhancing foods help keep the red and orange forms bright. Provide caves, smooth rocks and driftwood, since they like to dig and claim a hideout.

Tank Mates

Blood Parrots are semi-aggressive but usually less pushy than most cichlids their size. Good tank mates include Silver Dollar Fish, a Clown Loach group, Bala Sharks and calm medium cichlids such as the Severum Cichlid. Avoid very aggressive cichlids that can bully them, and tiny fish they could swallow. Fans of hybrid cichlids may also like the Red Hump Head Flowerhorn, though flowerhorns are usually best kept alone.
