Care and Tank Setup

Blue Hippo Tangs are active swimmers that need a long tank with open water and plenty of live rock for hiding. When frightened they wedge into crevices or lie flat, which is normal behavior. Small juveniles can start in a smaller system, but plan for 180 gallons as they grow. Keep water stable with strong filtration, good oxygenation and a protein skimmer. Like most tangs they are prone to marine ich, so quarantine new fish and feed a varied diet with plenty of algae to support their health. Offer dried seaweed on a clip daily along with quality pellets and frozen foods.

Tank Mates

Blue Tangs get along with most peaceful and semi-aggressive reef fish. Good companions include clownfish, the Royal Gramma and the Green Chromis Damselfish. Tangs can fight with other tangs, especially those of similar shape, so add them at the same time in large tanks. Popular pairings in big systems include our new Yellow Tang and Powder Blue Tang.
