Care and Tank Setup

Emerald Crabs need live rock with plenty of caves and crevices, where they hide during the day and come out to graze. They are hardy, but like all crustaceans they need a slow drip acclimation and a tank free of copper.

Once the nuisance algae is gone, feed dried seaweed and the odd sinking pellet. A well-fed Emerald Crab is a reliable reef citizen, while a hungry one may pick at corals or try to catch a sleeping fish, which is why they are rated reef safe with caution. Most tanks need only one or two; the larger lots suit big systems and frag tanks.

Tank Mates

Emerald Crabs get along with most peaceful reef fish and other cleaners. They work well alongside grazing snails like the Astraea Snail, algae-eating fish such as the Lawnmower Blenny, and hermits like the Blue Knuckle Hermit Crab. Avoid predators such as triggers, puffers and hogfish, which hunt crabs.
