Care and Tank Setup
Tuxedo Urchins need a mature, cycled tank with live rock to graze. They are reef safe, but they like to carry shells, rubble and sometimes small frags on their backs, so glue frags down firmly. They will also graze some coralline algae, which most keepers accept for the algae control they provide.
Urchins are very sensitive to salinity swings and copper, so drip acclimate slowly and keep parameters stable. When the algae is gone, offer dried seaweed clipped near the rock.
Tank Mates
Tuxedo Urchins live peacefully with corals, shrimp and most reef fish. They team up well with other grazers like the Astraea Snail and with algae-eating fish such as the Lawnmower Blenny. Cleaner shrimp like the Peppermint Shrimp are also good company. Avoid triggers, puffers and hogfish, which prey on urchins.
