• Minimum tank: 50 gallons
• Temperament: Peaceful, reef-safe, may eat small shrimp
• Care level: Easy to moderate
• Water parameters: 72-78°F, pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025
• Diet: Carnivore: mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, pellets and live pods

Care and Tank Setup

This wrasse buries itself in the sand to sleep, so give it a fine sand bed at least 2 inches deep. Provide live rock to forage over and a secure lid, since wrasses jump when startled.

Feed meaty foods two or three times a day. It is safe with corals and clams, but small ornamental shrimp may be eaten, so add it with care if you keep tiny shrimp.

Females and young fish show softer colors with black spots on the fins, while males develop intense blue and green lines with a yellow tail as they mature. Add only one male per tank, though a male can live with one or more females in a larger aquarium.

Tank Mates

The Melanurus Wrasse gets along with most peaceful and semi-aggressive reef fish. Fairy wrasses such as the Carpenter’s Fairy Wrasse and Blue Sided Fairy Wrasse make colorful companions, along with the Royal Gramma. It also pairs well with our new Yellow Coris Wrasse in a larger tank and with tangs like the Scopas Tang.
