Care and Tank Setup
Build plenty of rockwork with caves and crevices. The Orchid Dottyback likes to dart in and out of cover and will claim a favorite cave as its own. A covered tank is wise, since dottybacks can jump.
Feed small meaty foods once or twice a day. It is reef-safe with corals and will even hunt bristle worms and small pests. Very small ornamental shrimp may be at risk.
Because it is captive-bred, the Orchid Dottyback is a great choice for reef keepers who want a sustainable, hardy fish. It quickly learns to take frozen and pellet foods, rarely needs coaxing to eat, and holds its brilliant purple color for years with good care and a varied diet.
Tank Mates
Keep one dottyback per tank unless the system is large, and avoid fish with a similar shape and color. It does well with clownfish such as our new Ocellaris Clownfish, with tangs like the Yellow Tang, and with the Lawnmower Blenny or Flame Cardinalfish. If you like the look of the group, compare it with our Purple Dottyback, but do not house the two together.
