Care and Tank Setup
Set up a cycled reef or fish-only tank of 30 gallons or more with live rock and moderate flow. Percula clowns stay near a home base, which can be an anemone, a soft coral or a cave. Hosting is optional, and captive-bred fish thrive without an anemone. Feed two or three small meals a day. Percula and Ocellaris look alike, but the percula usually has thicker black borders around its bands. Pairs form easily when two young fish are added together, and the larger one becomes the female.
Tank Mates
Percula clowns can be territorial around their host, but they live well with most peaceful reef fish. Good choices include the Royal Gramma and the Banggai Cardinalfish. In a mature reef with strong lighting, many keepers offer a Fancy Bubble Anemone Rose as a host. Compare it with our new Ocellaris Clownfish, and add a peaceful new Firefish Goby for color in the lower rockwork. Keep one pair of clowns per tank and avoid large predatory fish.
