Care and Tank Setup

Purple Tangs need a large, mature tank with lots of live rock and open swimming space. Plan for 120-130 gallons for an adult. Keep water stable with strong circulation, good oxygen levels and efficient skimming. Like other tangs, they benefit from quarantine and a varied, algae-rich diet. Offer dried seaweed every day and add herbivore pellets and frozen foods to keep their deep purple color. Purple Tangs are hardy once settled and help graze nuisance algae from the rocks.

Tank Mates

This tang is confident and can be aggressive toward other tangs, especially other Zebrasoma and fish with a similar shape. Add it last, or add tangs together in a very large tank. Good companions include clownfish, the Royal Gramma, the Green Chromis Damselfish and dwarf wrasses. Collectors of rare tangs may also like the Gem Tang, another premium Zebrasoma. Related Zebrasoma among our new arrivals include the Yellow Tang and Scopas Tang; mix them only in very large systems and add them together.
